Susan Collett New Page Added To Studio Ceramics Canada

Susan Collett

Susan Collett

A new page on  Toronto, Ontario artist, Susan Collett has been added to the website studioceramicscanada.com.

Susan’s works explore themes of strength and fragility as she pushes the boundaries of clay. Her sculptures develop from vessel-like forms to intricately layered and penetrated  shapes and layers, “done in the moment.” Light and movement, surface and space are pushed to the limits as Susan investigates life, chaos and order.

Stay tuned. More pages are in the works on artists such as Enid Legros-Wise, Connie Pike, Les Manning, Stan and Jean Clarke, Luke Lindoe, Brendan Tang and many others.

North Bay and Area Potters Guild Being Created

NB Potters GuildThings are moving in North Bay. Under the leadership of Keith Campbell a new group is in the process of getting together.  After Canadore closed its pottery studio local potters are taking the initiative to keep things alive. The following is a press release for their “first ever” AGM written in Keith’s inimitable style.

Press Release for the North Bay and Area Potters Guild

The North Bay Potters Guild is having their first ever Annual General Meeting (AGM), being held Thursday, March 27 at 7 pm at 150 Oak St West.

This is not going to be a boring, horrible experience, but will be fun and informative with cup cakes being served and a draw for a Keith Campbell porcelain covered jar worth $250. And, last but not least, we are going on a field trip down the street to the new home of the North Bay and Area Potters Guild at 128 Oak St East. We will then take photographs to celebrate this historical event. You will also learn how to become part of this incredible group! We will answer all your questions about the different levels, and the costs. When the renovations are complete, when we will open our doors for business. We will also present our financial budget at that time.

We are North Bay’s newest arts and cultural group in the downtown area and we have plans for classes, sales, exhibits and partnerships with the other arts and cultural groups in the city. We are working to make the City of North Bay an arts and cultural center.

Our web site is www.nbpottersguild.org and our email is nbpottersguild@gmail.com

Please join us for this event,

 Keith

Website ARCH-BC Worth Looking At

ARCH_BC Homepage

ARCH_BC Homepage

Check out ARCH-BC, a database developed by the Potters Guild of British Columbia (PGBC). It is an invaluable resource not only for the history of BC pottery but also for the documenting of potters from across Canada and from around the world who taught, demonstrated or visited the province. PGBC documents going back to the 1960s have been archived and digitized for retrieval by anyone.

Kudos to the Guild. They are light years ahead of so many other regions in preserving their ceramic history. A key driver in this project is Debra Sloan of the Guild, one of the most helpful and informed people in the business.

Studio Ceramics Canada New Page on Pottery on Prince Edward Island

Pottery on Prince Edward Island Website

Pottery on Prince Edward Island Website

studioceramicscanada.com has published a new page Pottery on Prince Edward Island. Not all collections are physical, material. This one is virtual, a website. The collection is of particular interest in that the publisher, Ian Scott, has also had the foresight to document artists’ signatures and marks. This is a gift to collectors and researchers. If only more organizations, sites and publications would do the same. Identification and collecting would be so much easier.

Artist Paula Murray Page added to studio ceramics.com website

Paula Murray

Paula Murray

A new page on the Meech Lake artist, Paula Murray, has been added to the website studioceramicscanada.com.

Paula Murray’s porcelain works reflect an inquisitive mind exploring the natural and the spiritual within the individual and within the group. Shells and shorelines, bowls and reeds are her literal subjects, as individuals or in groups. Within these forms she explores the forms and stresses, the cracks and pressures of surface and shape as porcelain and fibreglass are folded, pressed and stained. Her work displays effects ranging from an almost exact individual zoological precision to the subtle metaphorical individuality of surfaces and shapes within a grouping. Subtlety and contemplation are constants.

Stay tuned. More pages are in the works on artists such as Ann Mortimer, Susan Collett, Enid Legros-Wise, Connie Pike, Les Manning, Stan and Jean Clarke and many others. Anyone who has memories or images of these artists they would be willing to share please contact me.

Welcome to a new page on studioceramicscanada.com on the Hansen-Ross Pottery in Fort Qu’ Appelle, Saskatchewan. David Ross  and Folmer Hansen maintained a joint studio focusing on Scandinavian and Leach-inspired art in the middle of the Canadian prairies. Much of the material is based on an interview I had with Folmer Hansen many years ago.

Ruth Gowdy McKinley Page Published

studioceramicscanada.com has just published a new page on the iconic artist Ruth Gowdy McKinley. Much of the page is based on an interview I conducted with Ruth, December 8, 1980. Much help was also provided by her daughter, Lauren McKinley Renzetti. Thank you Lauren.

Click on the link above and enjoy the page, the images and the passion of a great ceramist.

Do you recognize these pottery marks?

A little help please. Does anyone recognize these artists’ marks below?

Unknown Pot Signature 1

Unknown Pot Signature 1

The first may have Inuit connections from the ’60s or ’70s even though the signature itself does not appear Inuit. The clay seems to be a heavily grogged stoneware. The base looks as though it was cut straight from the batt.

bluebird pot signature 1

The second may have come from the London region. The foot is trimmed with the signature incised before the glaze firing.

Just leave a comment to this post. Many thanks for any help.
