Offered for sale is a 1970s era Beauce pottery casserole. From Quebec, Canada. The Ceramique de Beauce was in business from 1939 to 1989. Designed by Jean Cartier (1924-1996), this cocotte is a classic example of what was termed industrial utilitarian art. With a mid century modern type influence, this has a light colored clay body and splotches of thick sunny yellow glaze on the exterior. The bottom is marked as shown, and includes the model number C-50.
The ceramic cooking pot measures 15″ long, 8 1/4″ wide across the center and is 7″ high with the cover in place. This is a substantial piece that weighs 6 lbs./9.5 oz. unpacked. There are no cracks or chips. This has been used, and the interior bottom is of a bit darker color consistent with being utilized for cooking. Truly a fine example of the genre.Strange color variations are due to glare as opposed to defect.
